On the Morning of November 8th, Professor Shen Dinggang, the Founding Dean of School of Biomedical Engineering, ShanghaiTech University delivered a speech that is the first lecture of 2021 entitled “Application of AI in the Whole Process of Imaging Diagnosis and Treatment” at AI Tower, Shanghai Xuhui West Bund.

Professor Shen Dinggang, the guest speaker of this talk, was the Director of IDEA lab and Director of Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), USA. He was also a tenured Professor of Radiology, Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering. Professor Shen has been involved in the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence in medical image computing for a long time, including early brain development, early diagnosis, and the prediction of Alzheimer's disease, as well as diagnosis, prognosis and radiotherapy of brain tumor, breast cancer and prostate cancer. He is a pioneering scientist carrying out imaging AI research all over the world and is one of the first to apply deep learning to medical imaging.

In his speech, Prof. Shen revealed the impact of AI technology on imaging diagnosis and treatment from three aspects: empowering devices, empowering clinics, and empowering research. Professor Shen believes that AI-enabled devices make scanning faster, safer, and more economical. When doing brain science research in the United States, it usually takes 45 minutes for a scan of a patient, but now we can complete the scan in 100 seconds with AI empowerment. In rectal cancer radiotherapy, the use of AI technology can shorten the time from examination to radiotherapy planning and implementation from 23 days to 23 minutes. Second, AI technology is also useful in coronary artery analysis, fracture detection, brain development and brain aging, and the COVID-19. In Alzheimer research, AI algorithms can segment the brain into 106 sub-regions in seconds and analyze the follow-up data to quantify the information of brain changes to help doctors with diagnosis and treatment. Finally, Prof. Shen suggested that academia should strengthen the cooperation with industry, summarize the complex problems encountered in industry into scientific problems, and conduct in-depth research in the laboratory to promote academic development and  industrial practices.

This Talk is guided by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information and the Government of Xuhui District, and co-sponsored by the Global Artificial Intelligence Academic Alliance (GAIAA) and Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Professor Wang Yanfeng, Secretary-General of the Alliance and Assistant to Director of Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, in greeting participants, gave the brief address and awarded Professor Shen the certificate of “Honorary Lecturer of Shanghai AI Talk". After the welcome message,Dr. Zhang Shaoting, Deputy Secretary-General of the Alliance and the Vice President and Deputy Head of Research at SenseTime, hosted the Talk.
